Check Your Eligibility
Like most countries, you’ll need to apply for legal residency (which we’ll cover in more detail below). Prior to applying, you’ll need to make sure you’re eligible. Consider the following reasons why Canada may deny your application:
- Criminal record
- Health issues
- Financial issues
- Human or international rights violation
- Misrepresentation on application
- Unable to meet conditions of immigration laws
- Ineligible family member
These are the most common reasons why people applying for legal residency are declined. Check to make sure that you don’t have any of these issues prior to filing your application.
Consider the Legal Residency Types
There are all kinds of legal residency statuses in Canada. By doing some homework in advance, you’ll know which one you’re most qualified for. Residency types include immigrant investor, start-up visa, self-employed, caregiver, family sponsorship and more.
If you’re between the ages of 18-30, Canada also offers a Canadian Working Holiday Visa for Brits. Also known as IEC (International Experience Canada), it allows people to come to Canada without employment lined up.
If you’re chosen for the program, you’ll have two years in Canada. After the two years, you need to apply for residency or get a work permit through your employer. Keep these in mind when figuring out how to migrate to Canada.
Apply, Pay, and Wait for Your Visa
This is an important legal process to follow when it comes to how to migrate to Canada. Select the residency type that’s best for you (or IEC), apply, pay the fees and wait for your visa to be approved.
While the fees can be expensive, an individual pays $550 CAD while a family application is $1250 CAD, your application won’t be processed until the full fees have been paid.
Once you’ve been approved and have received your visa, it’s time to plan the fun stuff!
Identify the Areas You’d Most Like to Live In
While most people moving to Canada will have their location predetermined by their employer, there are lots of choices for those not locked into a specific location.
Are you looking to escape London for the rolling hill and wide open spaces of Alberta? If you’ve lived in the country, maybe it’s time to move to the big city, whether it be Vancouver or Toronto?
Toronto is the business capital of the country, is close to the U.S., and will also make a flight home to the UK much shorter than choosing to live on the west coast of Canada.
